Solar Panel Array to be Built on Highest Plateau on Earth
If you got any closer to the sun, you’d be in outer space! The highest place on earth (other than a mountaintop), the Tibetan Plateau, will soon be home to a solar panel array built by SunTech.
Capturing intense sunlight – less filtered by the atmosphere than at lower levels – solar energy can be more efficiently absorbed and converted into solar electricity. The Tibetan Plateau sits 4,000 meters above sea level and is situated between the Himalayan range and the Taklamakan Desert. This makes the highest plateau on earth a prime spot for solar panels!
SunTech’s 1o megawatt (MW) solar panel array on the Tibetan Plateau will generate over 20,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of solar electricity for towns and villages in the remote region, including the Chek Kang village in Sangri County.
Reliance on solar power will be more predictable and efficient than the current use of hydrolectric facilities, and should help Tibet achieve sustainable economic development. Existing energy sources will not be abandoned, however – just supplemented with power from the solar panel array on the Tibetan Plateau.
A sure sign of the region’s excitement supporting SunTech’s solar panel installation is the new SunTech flag that now flies on Mount Everest!
